Partners at Moradi Neufer Family Law release “The Collaborative Start Workbook” to help couples build trust and financial transparency.
SAN FRANCISCO Rejecting the outdated notion that prenuptial agreements plan for divorce, family law partners Patricia Van Haren and Kiana Katie Moradi today released “The Collaborative Start Workbook: A Guide for Using the Premarital Agreement Process to Build a Stronger Future Together”. This new interactive resource flips the script on marital planning, offering engaged couples a practical framework to build financial transparency, align personal values and strengthen their relationships before walking down the aisle.
Designed for couples considering a prenuptial agreement, the workbook provides accessible guidance and exercises to help them prepare for the legal process while also having meaningful conversations about their finances, personal values, family plans and shared future. The authors emphasize that these discussions can help couples identify areas of agreement, address potential concerns, and begin their marriage with greater transparency and alignment.
The workbook walks readers through important topics that couples often miss when they begin the prenup process, including personal and financial goals, difficult conversations about money, financial disclosures, family planning, separate and community property, spousal support, and the steps to finalize and later update an agreement.
“Couples often think of a prenup only as a legal document, but the process can also create an opportunity for important conversations about finances, family, responsibilities and shared goals,” Ms. Van Haren said. “We created this workbook to give couples a practical starting point so they can enter the process informed and prepared about the future they want to build together.”
While the workbook explains both traditional and collaborative approaches to creating a premarital agreement, it focuses primarily on the collaborative process. Under that approach, each person retains their own attorney, but the couple and their attorneys work together to develop the agreement through open discussions rather than relying solely on the exchange of competing drafts. Financial neutrals and family specialists may join the process to provide additional guidance if needed.
Respected mediator and collaborative family lawyer Forrest S. Mosten, an author and longtime educator in mediation and collaborative practice, has endorsed the workbook.
“In their Prenup Workbook, Patricia Van Haren and Kiana Katie Moradi provide invaluable education and guidance to prepare people to successfully navigate the prenup process,” Mr. Mosten said. “While marriage is based on love, emotional attachment, hope, and promises, the prenup process is generally dominated by lawyers and complex technical requirements. Written in simple-to-understand English supported by helpful illustrations, this workbook should be given to their clients by lawyers, therapists, financial professionals, and clergy. Long overdue, this workbook should become a standard resource to help couples efficiently and effectively prepare not just for the prenup legal document, but for marriage itself.”
Mr. Mosten is a certified family law specialist who has practiced mediation since 1979 and has authored several books addressing mediation, collaborative law and peacemaking in family law, including “Family Lawyer as Peacemaker” and “Building a Successful Collaborative Family Law Practice”.
The authors make clear that the workbook is an educational and preparatory resource, not a replacement for independent legal advice. The authors encourage couples to work with experienced family law attorneys and, when appropriate, neutral professionals to create an agreement tailored to their individual circumstances.
“The Collaborative Start Workbook” is available in Kindle and paperback formats through Amazon.
